The CMU IDeATe at Brooklyn Navy Yard situates on the corner between the navy yard and city grid. The design presents a new academic building extension that wraps around the two historical buildings, creating a sheltered central courtyard that is the heart of the building where it serves as an interactive display space for both guest and tenants.

Metaphorically, the courtyard reflects a dry dock of the navy yard, where functional space and circulation surround the most important space within the center. The design pays tribute to the rich history of its site and utilizes the strategic programmatic function of its infrastructure.

Additional from formal and programmatic studies, the project also explores active or passive performative systems. These systems address both the environmental qualities of the site as well as the structural design of the building. While some systems were not fully developed to be incorporated into the final design, they serve as inspirations that help derive a holistic proposal.
